When your child says reading is boring

"Boring" usually means too hard, too long, or not mine. Three small swaps that turn a refusal into a page turned.
Translate the word 'boring'
Children rarely say "this is too difficult and I feel embarrassed". They say boring. It is a protective word, and it is useful information rather than a verdict on books.
Ask instead: is it the words, the length, or the story? The answer tells you exactly which knob to turn.
What to try first
- Too hard: read every other page yourself.
- Too long: agree on a stopping point before you start.
- Not theirs: let them choose, even if you would not.
Choose stories about their own daily battles
A child who is fighting bedtime, lotion, or tidying up will lean in to a story about exactly that — especially when it is funny and nobody is being told off.
Recognition is a powerful hook. When a child sees their own resistance on the page, reading stops being homework and becomes a conversation.
Read badly on purpose
Mispronounce a character's name. Give the dog a ridiculous voice. Let your child correct you. Being the expert in the room is enormously motivating.
Laughter lowers the stakes, and lowered stakes are what a stuck reader needs most.
